Did you not know that Allah has power over everything?
- 4 min read

2-104: O you who believe! do not say, “Listen to us,” but say, “Look at us and listen,” and for the infidels there is a painful punishment.
2-105: Neither those who are infidels from among the owners of the book nor the polytheists like that any good should be sent down upon you from your Fosterer, but Allah chooses for His mercy whomever He wills and Allah is the Possessor of great grace.
2-106: Whatever We abolish from Our signs (Divine revelations) or cause to be forgotten, We bring (something) better than it or like it. Did you not know that Allah has power over everything?
2-107: Did you not know that Allah’s is the kingdom of the skies and the earth, and (that), besides Allah, there is neither a guardian nor a helper for you?
2-108: Do you intend to question your messenger as Musa was questioned earlier? And anyone who seeks to exchange belief for infidelity, he has surely gone astray from the balanced way.
2-109: Many of the owners of the book wish to turn you to infidelity after your belief, out of envy on their part (and) after the truth having become clear to them, so pardon and overlook till Allah (comes out) with His command (in this regard), Allah certainly has power over everything.
2-110: And establish worship (salat) and give charity (zakat) and whatever good you send before for yourselves, you will find it with Allah, Allah is certainly the Seer of what you do.
2-111: And they say, “No one can ever enter the garden except he who is a Jew or a Christian.” This is their desire, say, “Bring your proof if you are truthful.”
2-112: Why not! whoever submits himself to Allah and he is a doer of good, then for him, his reward is with his Fosterer, and there will neither be any fear on them nor will they grieve.
The questions raised in Ayah 106 and 107 are asking if Humans did not know that Allah has power over everything, He can reveal a book to his chosen messenger(s) in our case Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) through communication means we Humans could not detect, except for whom it was intended to hear and record. He has the power to change what was revealed either by removing the revealed verses completely or by exchanging with some other verse that was better. There are ahadith which talk about changes being made to the Quran during its revelation.1
If a verse was abrogated it would be replaced with another verse, as is suggested by the hadith from Bukhari, see the full text of hadith in the Endnotes.2 while another hadith talks about cancellation of a verse, which was recited by Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and Sahaba (رضي الله عنهم).3
And to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) belongs the Kingdom of the Skies and the Earth and anything that is not proven by Revelation, such as, only Jews and Christians will enter paradise, to this Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) replies and says that it is their desire and asks Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) to Say: “Bring your proof if you are truthful.”

Al-Bara’ b. ‘Azib reported: This verse was revealed (in this way): “Guard the prayers and the ‘Asr prayer.” We recited it (in this very way) so long as Allah desired. Allah, then, abrogated it and it was revealed:" Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer." A person who was sitting with Shaqiq (one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters) said: Now it implies the ‘Asr prayer. Upon this al-Bara’ said: I have already informed you how this (verse) was revealed and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best. Imam Muslim said: Ashja’i narrated it from Sufyan al-Thauri, who narrated it from al-Aswad b. Qais, who narrated it from ‘Uqba, who narrated it from al-Bara’ b. ‘Azib who said: We recited with the Prophet (ﷺ) (the above-mentioned verse like this, i. e. instead of Salat al- Wusta, Salat al-‘Asr) for a certain period. as It has been mentioned (in the above-quoted hadith). Narrated Sa’id bin Jubair: The people of Kufa disagreed (disputed) about the above Verse. So I went to Ibn Abbas and asked him about it. He said, “This Verse:– “And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell.” was revealed last of all (concerning premeditated murder) and nothing abrogated it.” Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 4590 ↩︎
Narrated Anas bin Malik: For thirty days Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) invoked Allah to curse those who had killed the companions of Bir- Mauna; he invoked evil upon the tribes of Ral, Dhakwan, and Usaiya who disobeyed Allah and His Apostle. There was reveled about those who were killed at Bir-Mauna a Qur’anic Verse we used to recite, but it was cancelled later on. The Verse was: “Inform our people that we have met our Lord. He is pleased with us and He has made us pleased.” Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 2814 ↩︎
